WHAT IS ART

Elements of Art:

In this class we will define the seven elements of art which are your ingredients for creating art. We will create elements of art example cards to help understand aesthetic valuing, how to use it in our artwork and how to identify it in various works of art.

Principles of Art:

In this class we will explore nine principles of art which are the instructions on how to use the elements. We will create principles of art example cards to help understand aesthetic valuing, how to use them in our artwork and how to identify it in various works of art.

BRAIN TRAINING

Right Brain Thinking:

In this class we will identify the 5 basic elements of shape and practice deconstructivism. We will then draw a contour line drawing upside down to exercise the right side of the brain. (Inspire students do 4 more on their own) Our
instructor, Janelle Penner, is a credentialed art teacher who loves showing her students that anyone can become an artist when they take time and learn the step by step process she demonstrates.

CONTOUR LINE DRAWING

In this Art Foundations Class we will learn about counter line drawing and how to switch from left brain drawing to right brain drawing using our hands as our subject. We will begin by engaging in blind contour line drawings exercises. After the exercises and while the brain is still in Right mode thinking, then we will use contour line drawing to draw our hands in three different positions. (Inspire students are required to draw (A) their feet; (B) one of their hands; (C) an object in their workroom/study area.) Our instructor.

CREATING COMPOSISTIONS

Positive & Negative Space:

We will identify form, volume and positive and negative space for the purpose of developing compositions and balancing light and dark areas. We will do this by first creating Notan thumbnails with black ink on white paper and then inverting the image using white charcoal on black paper.

FORMS & VALUES

Graphite:

Using a wide range of tonal values you can create complex drawings. In this Art Foundations Class, we will learn how to turn 2-dimensional shapes into 3-dimensional forms by shading. Using different degrees of pencils we will learn how to create light and dark values in your drawing. Learn the difference between core shadows and cast shadows and make your objects pop off the page.

STILL LIFE IN GRAPHITE

Basket of Apples:

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In this Art Foundations Class, we will look at a still life and use our observational skills to draw what we see. We will learn how to recreate what is seen by measuring objects in relation to each other, lending and overlap shapes in order to bring our drawings to life.

PEN & INK

Forms & Values:

Using simple, carefully placed strokes we can create beautiful impressions of real life objects. In this Art Foundations Class, we will learn how to turn 2- dimensional shapes into 3- dimensional forms by shading using a method called hatching. Using different pens with various line widths we will learn how to create light and dark values in our drawing. Learn the difference between core shadows and cast shadows and make your objects pop off the page.

Still Life Drawing:

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In this Art Foundations Class, we will look at a still life and use our observational skills to draw what we see. We will learn how to recreate what is seen by measuring objects in relation to each other, vary line widths and overlap shapes in order to bring our drawings to life.

LINEAR PERSPECTIVE

Perspective Basics:

We will identify the different aspects of perspective (including vanishing points, horizon lines, and receding lines) along with the different types of perspective (one-point, two-point, three-point perspective, etc.). We will then draw our name &"n 3D" using one-point perspective.

Room Interior:

We will use guided steps to draw the interior space of a room using one point perspective. In addition we will learn how to add in various details to create the illusion of a 3D space.

City Scape - Bird's-eye View:

We will use guided steps to draw a bird's-eye view of a city scape in one point perspective. In addition we will learn how to add details to add the illusion of a 3D drawing.
