Gouache paint (opaque watercolor) is a fun and forgiving medium. It is especially great for small paintings and journaling. It is super easy to photograph or scan for social media, because it’s matte and velvety finish has no annoying glare.
If you are curious about gouache paint, and you want to try it out, we would be pleased to have you in our class, taught by L.K. Papadakis. Gouache is particularly well suited to small paintings, journals, cards, and even trading cards.
Coastal scenes can be quite challenging when considering the foggy skies, crashing ocean waves, ground textures, and the lay of the land. Here the emphasis is on a distant view of the subject with a foreground created by silhouette of dark trees that frame the main scene. We will talk about the rules of atmospheric perspective in the creation of the illusion of depth. We will also learn about continuity of colors throughout the entire composition.
Oh, the fun of trying to capture such quick little creatures as hummingbirds in is still painting. Colors are the main focus of this lesson. The paper is toned blue. The honeysuckle flowers are a bright orange in contrast to the background. The challenge is to paint the hummingbirds as the main focus, using size, highlights, and colors to lead the eye around such a bright and colorful painting.
Oh, abstract sunflowers in bright and bold colors! No tracing here; we will use the shapes of the brushes to make marks and brushstrokes that allude to a happy floral burst of creativity! We will do two small paintings. One will be layers of color with no under drawing to guide our way. An exercise in letting go of control in a good way the other painting will be gesturally sketched with a ballpoint pen, and overpainted with transparent gouache to let the pen strokes show through, adding a bit of whimsy to the painting.
